Dial Up Connection

Dial up connection is the most basic way to access the Internet by connecting with a computer and a modem to an ISP (Internet Service Provider). The modem dials a phone number when Internet access is needed. Dial up connection is typically a lot slower than a high speed connection like digital subscriber line, or DSL. Due to technology restrictions, the maximum data transfer rate that can be achieved with a dial up modem is limited to 56 Kbps, or 56 thousand bits per second.

When you access the Internet using dial up connection, the speeds that you will experience will vary based on a variety of factors, including the following:
• The speed and type of your modem.
The quality of the phone lines in your area.
• Computer configuration.
• The amount of traffic on the Internet.
• Server and router speeds of the Web sites you access.
