ADSL & DSL Providers
Popular high speed Internet method. DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a very high speed connection that uses the same wires as a regular telephone line, however, DSL uses previously unused frequencies of the line so that a user may connect to the Internet and talk on the phone at the same time. The company that offers DSL will usually provide the modem as part of the installation. DSL disadvantages: Works better when you are closer to the provider's central office. Is faster for receiving data than it is for sending data over the Internet. Not available everywhere.

ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) is a form of DSL. ADSL is asymmetric in the sense that it uses most of the channel to transmit downstream to the user (download speed) and only a small part to receive information from the user (upload speed).

Cable Internet Providers
Good alternative to DSL, provides high speed Internet access using your TV cable. Cable Internet connects users to the Internet through digital (coaxial) cables. Cable Internet can sometimes require professional installation and the speeds are not always consistent. It is however widely available and very affordable.

Dial Up Internet Service Providers
Connect to the Internet using your telephone line. This is a cheap alternative but not very fast. The speed at which you connect to the Internet is determined by a number of factors: the speed and type of your modem, the quality of the phone lines in your area, the amount of traffic on the Internet. Because of all of these factors, you should not expect your connection speed to be exactly the same speed as listed on your modem. Very often it is actually less.

A popular option for dedicated Internet access, a T1 (or DS1) is actually a type of digital phone connection that can either support 24 channelized voice or data connections, or be used in the aggregate at 1.544 Mbps (million bits per second).

T3 Providers / DS3 Providers
A T3 (or DS3) connection is a point-to-point dedicated line that provides six-hundred-seventy-two 64 kbit/s voice or data channels or in other words 28 T1 lines. A T3 is used to transmit digital signals at 44.736 Mbps.
